Food businesses

Are you starting a food business? Did you know you need approval from Council before you begin operating?

We encourage you to discuss your proposal with Council first. Your premises may already have approval in place to operate as a food business. It is an offence to operate a business without the necessary approvals in place.

The food you prepare will determine whether exhaust fans and/or grease traps must be installed. If your venue caters for more than 20 diners, you will need toilet facilities with hand-wash basins for staff, and similar facilities for customers.

Other important requirements relating to storage, waste facilities, hygiene, and surface finishes can be found in Chapter 16 of Kiama Development Control Plan 2012.

You must register your food business with Council and have the premises inspected by Council Officers before you start operating.

Are you planning on operating a mobile food van or temporary food stall? Requirements for these businesses can be found in Chapter 17 of Kiama Development Control Plan 2012.

There are also requirements for footpath dining.

Hair and beauty businesses

Are you starting a hairdresser or beauty salon (including nail salon or any other business where skin will be penetrated)? Did you know you need approval from Council before you begin operating?

We encourage you to discussing your proposal with Council first. Your premises may already have approval in place to operate a hair and beauty business. It is an offence to operate a business without the necessary approvals in place.

Requirements for hygiene and shop fittings for these types of businesses are detailed in Chapter 18 of Kiama Development Control Plan 2012.

You must register your hair and beauty business with Council and have the premises inspected by Council Officers before you start operating.

General businesses

All commercial buildings (shops or offices) require their initial use to be issued with development consent before the business starts operating. Please check with Council to find out if your shop or office has previously been issued with an approval.

If it hasn't, Council can help you with development application advice through its free Development Assessment Unit service or DA staff consultations.
