of a rural location.
This ambience, despite being nestled between two rapidly growing city centres, along major transport routes and only 1.5 hours from Australia’s biggest city of Sydney, gives Kiama a unique point of difference. It is a real lifestyle choice as well as a great base from which to conduct business into these busy markets. There are approximately 1000 businesses in the Kiama Municipal area with retailing, tourism, construction and dairying all playing major roles in the economic make-up of the Kiama area.
George Bass, who anchored his 28-ft whaleboat in what was to become Kiama Harbour, first recorded the area of Kiama in 1797. Initially settled by Cedar getters in 1832, this industry was soon supplanted by the dairying industry and basalt (blue metal) quarrying. Kiama Municipal Council was established in 1859, It is bounded by the Tasman Sea, the City of Shellharbour, City of Shoalhaven and the Municipality of Wingicarribee.
The Kiama local government area covers 256 square kilometres and has a population of approximately 20,000 and has been growing at an average annual rate of 2.48% (1986-2002).
