Youth Services

Youth Services are provided to assist young people in the areas of health, social, cultural, recreational and employment needs.

About Kiama Youth Centre

  • The Kiama Youth Centre opened in 1993 and provides information and referral to young people aged 12 - 24 throughout the Local Government Area.

  • Trained Youth Workers are available to provide assistance on a wide range of youth issues for young people and their families.

  • Kiama Youth Centre also offers a range of educational, recreational and community development programs.

  • Kiama Youth Centre provides 2 Youth Workers to work from Kiama High School each Friday.

  • Around 3000 young people between the ages of 12 - 24 frequent the Centre each year.

  • In 2013 Kiama Youth Centre will become a 'touchpoint' and be able to offer on-line telecounselling through Headspace.

Youth Advisory Committee
Youth Advisory Committee (YAC) meetings are held on the first Wednesday of each month at 4pm at Kiama Youth Centre. These meetings are designed to allow young people the opportunity to voice any concerns, issues or suggestions directly to Councillors and Council staff and to advocate on behalf of other young people living in the LGA. Minutes are taken at each meeting and are addressed at formal Council meetings.
Places on the YAC are currently available for young people and it is great experience for youth who want to have their voices heard and be recognised within the community.

If you have a great idea, want to make a suggestion or just find out what is going on for young people come along and join in.

Staff

  • Kiama Youth Centre is staffed by a full time and part time Youth Worker who are professionally trained to deal with many youth issues and can provide information and referral to  youth service providers. Youth Workers are available by appointment, phone, email or just pop in from Wednesday – Sunday 12 – 5pm.

Kiama High School project

  • One of the Youth Workers (male and female) work from Kiama High School each Friday to assist and mentor any students who may be struggling academically or socially. The project has been running since 2010 and has been an effective link in ensuring Kiama Council maintains links with  professionals in education in the Municipality area. Since the program began many new initiatives have been created with many joint projects undertaken including:
  • Youth Engagement meetings
  • Girls Group & Young Men’s groups
  • ‘Friends’ resilience program
  • Event Management Courses
  • Mental health ‘raising awareness’ events
