Services supported by Council

The following emergency services are supported by Council.

State Emergency Service

The State Emergency Service is the emergency agency responsible to assist the public during periods of storms and floods. The Kiama Local Unit is managed and manned by volunteers. It is also the accredited rescue unit for road, industrial, domestic and other rescue incidents in the Kiama area. Council has a responsibility to:

  • provide administrative support, accommodation and vehicles for the day-to-day operation of the Local Unit
  • assist in the provision of plant, labour and equipment when requested during emergencies.

Rural Fire Sevice

  • The RFS is the emergency agency responsible to prevent and extinguish fires in all areas outside of the Kiama Township urban area.
  • Council supports four Brigades (Gerringong, Foxground, Jamberoo, Carrington Falls) which are all manned by volunteers.
  • Management is through a centralised structure covering all brigades in the Kiama, Shellharbour and Wollongong Councils and through RFS professional employees. Council financially supports the operation of the management structure and directly assists in the provision of local brigade buildings.

Local Emergency Management Committee

The LEMC comprises representatives from all local emergency and support agencies. The committee covers both Kiama and Shellharbour areas and is jointly supported by both Councils through the provision of administrative services. It is responsible for the planning, preparation, response and recovery of all matters relating to emergencies that may affect the local communities.
