Medicines & medical waste

Medicines

Please don't flush medicines down the toilet - sewerage plants can't treat all chemicals in waste water and this can result in contamination of waterways.

Please don't pour medicines down the sink - household medicines contain highly soluble chemicals which when entered into water systems can harm aquatic life.

Please don't throw medicines into the garbage bin - household medicines disposed of this way end up in exposed landfill sites.

Blister packs for pills are not recyclable and should be put in your red lid garbage bin.

Return Unwanted Medicines through the RUM Project.

Syringes & needles

Sharps must NOT be placed in your yellow lid recycling bin or red lid garbage bin.

Before delivering your syringes to a pharmacy, ensure they are in a proper plastic sharps container. Please dispose of your sharps at authorised collection points such as:

Medical or sanitary waste

Medical and sanitary waste such as dialysis bags, colostomy bags, incontinence pads, bandages, bandaids and other items contaminated with bodily fluids should be wrapped in a plastic bag and disposed in your red lid garbage bin.

Householders that generate excessive quantities of non-recyclable waste resulting from a verified permanent or long-term medical condition can request a Specific Waste Bin Collection Service.

Where approval is granted, the red lid garbage bin will be collected weekly rather than fortnightly at no additional cost. All other waste-related fees, charges and services will remain the same.

Please contact Kiama Council for more information on (02) 4232 0444.
