X-rays can be recycled - they are processed to extract silver.   They can be dropped of at the Community Recycling Centre at the Minnamurra Waste & Recycling Depot.

Interesting facts about X-ray recycling:

  • X-ray films are processed in a refinery to extract the silver
  • X-ray films are heated using temperatures of over 1,000 degrees celsius
  • Silver is extracted and converted into a more pure silver form
  • The silver can then be reused for things such as silver solder, jewellery, the silver plating of utensils, electrical components and film manufacture.

X-rays can also be taken to household chemical collections which are held four times a year within the Illawarra/Shoalhaven region.  View a schedule of collection days and locations
