GO Organics – Kitchen to Compost Revolution is an exciting innovative new program for our household waste collection system.

The program will be trialled over a 12 month period and will enable residents to dispose of all their kitchen organic waste into the green waste bin which will then be converted into compost.  The compost will be quality food for the soil, which will contribute to building the soil health of our parks and sporting field.

Residents of garbage Zone 5 (Kiama Downs, west of Riverside Drive) have been selected as the first residents to participate in this program, due to commence in 7 November 2012.  It is proposed that the program will be phased in to all households across the municipality after the completion of the trial.

Why has this program come about?

A recent household waste survey showed that our red lid garbage bin contains 45% food waste. By placing this material into the green waste bin it can not only be made into valuable compost but it will further reduce the waste in our red lid bin which is a sent to landfill.

A comprehensive communication program has been developed to ensure residents are kept informed on what is involved in participating in the program. Over the coming weeks, this will include:

  1. A series of video messages providing background information and concepts of the program may be viewed using the following links:

  2.

  3. Regular information that will be delivered to letterboxes in Zone 5.
  4.

  5. An invitation to attend any one of the Community Engagement Meetings to be held at the North Kiama Neighbourhood Centre in October 2012
  6.

  7. And an information kit to assist residents in Zone 5 in collecting organic waste from your kitchen that will be delivered directly to residents homes. The kit includes:
  8.

In the past few weeks and in the coming weeks the GO Organics team has placed a bin sticker on your green organics bin (to replace the hot stamped instructions that will be void once the trial begins). This will act as a reminder of what can and cannot be placed in the green lid orgnics bin.

You will also note there is a change of frequency of service to:

  • Your green lid organics bin will be collected weekly

  • Your yellow lid recycling bin will be collected weekly

  • Your red lid landfill bin will be collected forntightly

Through a partnership between Kiama Council and residents of Zone 5, this trial aims to engage communities to become part of the solution of reducing waste going to landfill.
