Southern Cross Flight

CEKSmithOn 11th January 1933, Kingsford Smith's plane took of from Seven Mile Beach, Gerroa for New Plymouth, New Zealand. The flight took 14 hours and 10 minutes. The plane taxied along the beach from south to north on a runway illuminated by car headlights and burning drums of oil.

It was an historic flight that changed the air transport world forever in Australia and New Zealand. This was the first commercial Trans-Tasman flight.
