2008/2009 at a glance

Mayor’s introduction

Plan of action

It is my pleasure to deliver this summary of the 2008/2011 Management Plan - council’s plan of action for the forthcoming year, which also identifies major projects for the next three years.
The plan was exhibited for a period of six weeks before being presented to Council with community submissions last month. I thank people for their feedback, which is crucial to guide the council in its work to provide the services that are most valued by the community.
Where in recent years Council has completed large projects such as the upgrades of Gerringong Town Centre and Manning Street, Kiama and the redevelopment of the Jamberoo School of Arts, the current plan has an emphasis on asset maintenance including a program to reseal six kilometres of local roads.
The redevelopment of the Kiama Showground Pavilion is one of the largest projects.
The new Pavilion will provide the township of Kiama with an attractive community centre featuring a 340 seat hall, sheltered showground viewing area and exhibition and conference spaces to cater for a variety of community activities.
A new cycle/walkway across the Minnamurra Bridge will connect the area’s 40 kilometres of shared pathway safely to the Dunmore Cycleway.
Along with Kiama Harbour’s new jetty, additional footpaths, shelters and barbeque areas are planned to improve facilities at Blowhole Point.
Community support services such as community respite, transport, youth and cultural services will continue to be a significant part of Council’s work.
Environment and health issues remain at the fore of our activities with Council participating in the Cities for Climate Change program and working as a principal partner in grant funded projects such as the Illawarra Biodiversity and Food Project, the Sustainability Road Map and Business Treading Lightly.
Kiama Council values community consultation as the cornerstone of good governance and we look forward to working closely with residents to implement the 08/11 Management Plan and meeting the challenges that face our community.
