About the centre

OUtsideThe Old Fire Station located on the corner of Terralong & Shoalhaven Streets Kiama, is a major focus of culture and art in the Kiama community. It attracts many professional artists and visitors from not only the local community, but from across Australia.

Community arts are important in the everyday lives of the community. The Old Fire Station gallery, located in Kiama CBD, is a professional facility for exhibitions, workshops and other cultural events.

When Daisy the Cow is out the front of the gallery, it means there is something on inside! Come in and peruse the variety of exhibitions taking place from Kiama High School, Kiama Shellharbour Camera Club, Kiama Art Society, and individual artists using mediums ranging from pottery to painting, to sewing and embroidery, woodcraft and photography.

  • The Kiama Old Fire Station was built in 1915.
  • In 1996 Kiama Council and the Ministry of the Arts helped refurbish the space allowing the Old Fire Station to be used as a Community Arts Centre ever since.
  • Now the Old Fire Station Community Arts Centre has a community gallery and  kitchen for use by local artists and cultural groups
  • The Old Fire Station Community Arts Centre is booked fifty two (52) weeks per year and is available for hire for exhibitions, workshops, lectures, talks, recitals or as performance space.
  • The Community Arts Centre space is approx 10m x 7m
  • The mural on the back walls was painted by Trudi Voorwinden along with TAFE students during a TAFE Outreach Project, which trained 10 locals in mural design and coordination.
  • The side panels depict "Daisy" in the four seasons of our seaside environment. The trained locals involved in the Murals were: Leonie Barracluff, Maryann Conway, Robyn Drake, Carole Dunn, Emmanuel Fenech, Rachael Kalkowski, Michelle Kent, Vicki Webster, Tanya Bond, Andrew Lawden, Grant Roberts, Warren Hunt.

The Old Fire Station bookings are for 12noon Thursday to the following Wednesday at 5pm.

  • No commercially made items allowed. All items to be handmade original work.
