What is a Community Garden?

A community garden is land that is used by the community to grow food, to share information on gardening and environmental practices and to meet like-minded people.

Community gardening is a public, not-for-profit community activity that can have many benefits for the people involved and the environment.

To view a list of community gardens in the Illawarra, please download the Food Fairness Illawarra “Community Gardens in the Illawarra” guide.

How do we support Community Gardening in the LGA?

Kiama Council is committed to the future of community gardening as a significant strategy that can contribute to the health, wellbeing, social, environmental and cultural strengths of the community.

It defines the place of community gardening within the priorities of Council’s Integrated Strategic Planning framework and establishes the respective roles and relationships between Council and community garden groups.

Council aims to inform and assist community groups to effectively develop and sustain community gardening in the local area.

If you are interested in establishing a community garden, please read the following documents:

GROW LOCAL Guides

Wollongong, Shellharbour and Kiama Councils have jointly produced two GROW LOCAL garden guides with support from the NSW Government through its Environmental Trust.

GROW LOCAL is a two part resource encouraging Illawarra residents, schools, community groups and gardeners to create areas which celebrate the edible, and local native plants that thrive in our region.

The Illawarra Edible Garden Guide will provide you with information specific to the Illawarra about what grows well here, how to design a veggie patch and food forest for our local conditions and more.

The Illawarra Native Garden Guide will help you find suitable local native plants for urban and rural gardens of the Illawarra. It is by no means an exhaustive list, but will provide an introduction to those local native plants which are most readily available.
