LGA_LGWeek_2017_logoKiama Council is celebrating the three D’s during Local Government Week (31 July to 6 August), with a range of activities laid on for residents of all ages.

The theme for Local Government Week 2017 is Discovery, Diversity and Democracy.

With this theme in mind, Council has arranged events and activities to allow people to get behind the scenes of Council operations as well as talk with staff who will be visiting towns across the municipality to provide information and answer questions.

The week begins with a Discovery Bus Tour (9am to 12noon, Monday 31 July), with Council staff showing off the Council Chambers, Holidays Parks, Kiama Library, Kiama Leisure Centre, Community Recycling Centre SENTRAL Youth Services and Blue Haven Village.

Throughout the week Council will be setting up a Diversity Pop Up Shop in Jamberoo School of Arts (Tuesday 1 August), Kiama Village Shopping Centre (Wednesday 2 August) and Gerringong Town Hall (Friday 4 August).

The Pop Up Shop will allow residents to quiz Council staff about Council programs and projects such as the Dementia Friendly Kiama Project, Blue Haven Aged Care Centre of Excellence and Gerringong Library as well as the fitness programs provided by Kiama Leisure Centre.

They will also be able to get answers on the ever-popular topics of planning, pets, parking, toilets, rubbish and recycling as well as learn about grant opportunities, beach safety and disability services.

A highlight of the week will be the Democracy Meet and Greet (5pm, Wednesday 2 August) at The Pavilion.

This is always a popular event, where residents can meet councillors and senior staff and discuss what they’d like to see continue or change in the community, while enjoying food and drink.

Local Government Week will finish with the launch of the new-look SENTRAL Youth Services centre at Hindmarsh Park (Saturday 5 August), which includes the Kiama Independence Day Speech and Photo competitions.

The SENTRAL team has organised a jam-packed line-up of local musicians and artists. The finalists of the Independence Day speech contest will also be taking the stage, while entries to the photo competition will be on display.

All activities are free, however bookings are required for the Discovery Bus Tour and Democracy Meet and Greet (phone 4232 0444) and SENTRAL launch (phone 4233 1276).
