Destination Kiama has announced Kiama is set to become ‘Destination Surfing’ thanks to a new partnership with Surfing NSW.

Mayor Mark Honey said the partnership between Destination Kiama and Surfing NSW would see extensive promotion of Kiama as the ‘Surfing Destination’ for the NSW South Coast.

“The partnership will build on this to make our region a surfing mecca for half the NSW coastline,” Clr Honey said.

“Destination Kiama are to be congratulated on securing this exciting new partnership with Surfing NSW, which is a great win for our community,” Clr. Honey said.

Surfing NSW CEO, Luke Madden, said the three-year agreement would see the region used as a prime surfing hub for tourism, high performance programs and events.

“The Kiama region is one of the most wave-rich regions on the NSW south coast and one we’ve had great success in running events such as the World Junior Championship and the recent Kiama Bodyboard King Pro,” Mr Madden said.

“We look forward to strengthening the relationship with this partnership.”

The agreement locks in a number of surf competitions, including:

  • NSW Bodyboard State Titles
  • Woolworths Surfer Groms Competition
  • NSW Junior Regional Surfing Titles - Junior Shortboard
  • Australian Boardriders Battle

Added to this roster are the Werri Boardrider and Jones Boardriders events, which will receive  direct marketing and social media support from Surfing NSW.

Surfing NSW will also be providing a range of surfing programs and training, including its Indigenous Surfing Program, Level 1 Bodyboard Judging Course, Surfers Rescue 24/7 program and High Performance Coaching courses.

Kiama will also be promoted as a ‘Surfing Destination’ through a range of initiatives, including appointing surfing ambassadors and a ‘My Time in Kiama’ video series.

Stories promoting Kiama as a surfing destination would also be featured by Surfing NSW online.

Destination Kiama board member, Sue Thorley, said Surfing NSW would also be promoting Kiama’s surfing events via their direct marketing database, social channels and NSW Boardriders clubs and surf schools.

“We’ll also be working together on ideas to ‘activate’ our surfing events, attracting visits to our area from surfing fans as well as family and friends of those competing.”
