Evelaine Berry - Senior Citizen of the Year 2021

Evelaine Berry - Senior Citizen of the Year 2021

Evelaine Berry’s career as a nurse and midwife has taken her from her home town of Glen Innes to Papua New Guinea, and finally here in Kiama.

Evelaine started her work here with the Illawarra Community Health Service at Dapto, before being promoted to Clinical Oncology Nurse Consultant with the Illawarra Area Health Service.

Many hundreds of families throughout the Illawarra will never forget her relentless caring and determination to help them in a time when cancer care services were almost non- existent.

She fought hard for every service she thought necessary and played a prominent role in the establishment and growth of the Illawarra Cancer Care Centre.

While giving her all to every one of her patients, her particular interest was children.

Taking a group of local ‘cancer kids’ to a camp run by Camp Quality in Sydney in 1985, she came back determined to establish a group in the Illawarra and South Coast.

Evelaine established working committees in the Illawarra and Shoalhaven, and was the driving force to get the first camp underway. She missed her target of $10,000, having to settle for $300,000 instead.

Camp Quality Illawarra South Coast was established, and Evelaine remained involved for more than 20 years, always as a volunteer, earning a place in hearts of hundreds of children and their families.

She is devoted to the Kiama Uniting Church, and as a church elder has provided pastoral care for the less fortunate members of our community, especially refugees.

Evelaine also managed to turn adversity in her personal life into an opportunity to serve her community.

When her husband was diagnosed with dementia, Evelaine threw herself into learning as much as possible about the disease, care and treatment to care for him, and in turn becoming a supporter of our Dementia Awareness Group, the Kiama DAGs.

Evelaine Berry is a loving, caring and amazing member of the Kiama community and a worthy recipient of our Senior Citizen for 2021.
