Kiama Council, along with Wollongong, Shellharbour and Shoalhaven councils, is a proud supporter of the Local Government Regional NAIDOC Awards, being held this Saturday (30 July).

The Awards are the premier regional event for celebrating NAIDOC Week where Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people come together to celebrate their collective achievements.

The Awards promote and recognise the talents, excellence, and significant contributions that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and their organisations make to their own and the wider communities of the Illawarra and Shoalhaven.

Covid restrictions prevented the Awards being held in 2020 and meant a truncated celebration in 2021.

Instead organisers commissioned a film maker to capture the history and importance of the Awards.

‘Heal Country’ is the end result, a very powerful film that captures well the reverence and importance of the Local Government Regional NAIDOC Awards for our local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities.

Kiama Council thanks organisers for their efforts to ensure the return of the Awards in 2022, and congratulates all the nominees on their deserved recognition.
