Launch of Hindmarsh Park upgrade project - VIPs

Kiama Council is undertaking a $3 million upgrade to Hindmarsh Park with grant funding from the NSW Government’s NSW Public Spaces Legacy Program.

The proposed works include building a new, all ages and all abilities playground with shade, and potential incorporation of a rocket ship play structure to reinstate a similar piece of equipment that was removed from the park around 40 years ago, which many residents and visitors remember fondly.

The proposed upgrade may also include new shelters and picnic tables, a water refill station and an accessible shared pathway linking Hindmarsh Park to Black Beach Reserve.

Hindmarsh Park is situated in the centre of Kiama and is a focal point of the town. The park currently contains a playground, picnic tables, a bandstand, the Joyce Wheatley Community Centre and SENTRAL Youth Services Centre.

Kiama Council Director of Engineering and Works Mike Dowd said the project will improve the quality, aesthetics and safety of the park and deliver a significant open space play and leisure facility of regional importance.

"The upgrade will give better community access and a fresh appeal to this already popular open space in the centre of Kiama."

"Hindmarsh is a park beloved by residents and visitors alike, and we look forward to seeing what our landscape design experts will come up with, after extensive collaboration with the community and park users, to enhance the space," Mr Dowd said.

Mr Dowd also thanked the NSW State Government for its support in funding this project.

Council has awarded the tender for the upgrade of Hindmarsh Park to strategic design consultants Civille.

The company has extensive experience in designing parks for local councils.

Civille will work with Council to produce initial concepts and designs to guide the community consultation stage of the project.

Community members, local businesses and other stakeholders will be consulted through online surveys, information sessions, workshops and more.

The project is expected to be complete by the end of 2022.
