Household Bulky Waste doubles
Published on 03 July 2020
Kiama Council is doubling its efforts to help our community tackle household bulky waste.
Council is now holding not one, but two FREE Household Bulky Waste Drop Offs each year.
Our Household Bulky Waste (HBW) Drop Off allows our residents who pay for our waste services through their rates, to dispose of larger items not collected by our regular kerbside services.
As well as our regular red, green and yellow bin services, we have introduced a user-pays on-call kerbside collection service for household items up to 1m3 in size or 100kg total weight:

Our HBW Drop Off help residents freely dispose of larger household items such as mattresses, furniture, sporting goods, lounges and rugs.
Since we introduced the first HBW Drop Off in 2014, these annual events have proven incredibly popular.
Last year alone, people dropped off 182 tonnes of items, with 116 tonnes recycled or re-used, rather than going to landfill.
This included more than 53 tonnes worth of free items, picked up from the popular Up 4 Grabs tent.
The success of our yearly HBW Drop Off saw it recognised with a Local Government NSW Excellence in the Environment Award.
Rather than rest on our laurels, we’ve decided to host not one, but two HBW Drop Offs every twelve months. The next two are scheduled for:
- 12 -20 September 2020
- 13 – 21 March 2021
You can find out more about our HBW Drop Offs, as well as all our other waste services on your 2020-22 Waste Collection Calendar, which has been distributed to more than 11,000 households in our Municipality.
If you don’t have a calendar you can also find out everything about our waste services online:
We’ll be opening online registrations for our September HBWDO on Saturday 1 August.
