The Kiama Local Strategic Planning Statement (LSPS), our community’s vision for land use in our area over the next 20 years, has been finalised.

Councillors this week endorsed the final LSPS, including amendments made as a result of public submissions.

The LSPS sets out a 20-year vision for land use in the local area, as well as:

  • the special characteristics which contribute to local identity
  • shared community values to be maintained and enhanced
  • how growth and change will be managed into the future.

The Planning Statement is a requirement of the NSW Government, and complements the Kiama Community Strategic Plan and Illawarra-Shoalhaven Regional Plan.

The LSPS now becomes our chief planning document, setting out our planning priorities for the next 20 years and the actions needed to achieve those priorities.

This includes guiding any changes to our Local Environmental Plan and Development Control Plan.

The priorities of the LSPS have been grouped into five themes:

  • Manage Sustainable Growth
  • Develop a Diverse & Resilient Economy
  • Protect Rural Landscapes
  • Adapt to Climate Change and Protect our Environment
  • Foster Vibrant & Accessible Places.

The endorsement of the LSPS marks the finalisation of more than 18 months of development, which included extensive input and involvement from the community.

Led by our Manager Strategic Planning, the process included face-to-face and online community information sessions, briefings for Council committees and resident groups, and an extended public exhibition period.

This included making significant improvements to the draft statement which responded to community priorities and concerns.

The result is a document which reflects the community’s values and vision for our Municipality.
