Mayoral reception for IAS athletes
Published on 12 February 2021
Mayor Mark Honey's address:
As Mayor I formally welcome all the athletes, coaches and board members of the Illawarra Academy of Sport.
Kiama Council is a proud supporter of the great work done by the Academy.
The Academy helps turn our talented young people into world-class athletes.
It also helps them along the journey to adulthood and all the responsibilities that come with it.
Of course the last year or so has presented us all with unusual challenges.
This has been an especially testing time for young people in our community.
The resilience you have shown to persevere in your day-to-day lives, as well as the extra training as IAS athletes, during COVID, is an example to your peers, in fact to us all.
I ask everyone here to join me in recognising the resilience you have shown.
It is pleasing to see such a large contingent of IAS athletes from our municipality.
It’s also great to see a wide range of sports represented.
I wonder when we will see the first scholarship for the new Olympic sport of breakdancing.
No matter your sport, being part of the Illawarra Academy of Sport is a great achievement.
And no matter your future, you are a credit to your families, yourselves and our Municipality.
I wish you all the best.
