NYE Sky Show Cancelled

Kiama Council has decided to cancel the New Year’s Eve Sky Show as a COVID-19 safety measure.
Councillors voted unanimously at this week’s meeting, to replace the Sky Show on Thursday 31 December, with another event in Winter 2021.
Mayor Mark Honey said cancelling the popular fireworks and laser show, which attracts more than 10,000 people, was simply the right thing to do.
“The New Year’s Sky Show is much-loved by our residents and visitors, as well as people from Wollongong, the Highlands and Shoalhaven,” Clr Honey said.
“But there was simply no way we would be able to hold the show and keep everyone COVID safe.”
Clr. Honey said while the COVID situation may ease by Christmas, planning and setting up for the New Year’s Eve Sky Show was a six-month process.
“We needed to make a decision now, before we invested time, money and effort in an event that stood a good chance of having to being cancelled anyway.”
“Obviously this is disappointing to many people, as it’s a great family-friendly way to see in the new year.”
“That’s why we’re exploring options for an event in Winter 2021.”
“Hopefully we will all be in a much safer state by then, and we can put together a community-focused event to reflect on what we’ve all been through, and celebrate those who have helped keep us safe.”
