Kiama Council’s updated Social Media Policy was endorsed and adopted at the April 2023 Ordinary Meeting.

The policy was updated to align with the NSW Office of Local Government Model Social Media Policy, which was released mid-2022.

A draft version of the policy was presented to Council in December 2022 and was put on public exhibition for 28 days in February 2023.

The updated Social Media Policy outlines the 4 principles of Social Media Engagement

  1. Openness
  2. Relevance
  3. Accuracy
  4. Respect

The updated policy covers staff use, authorised users, and Councillor use of social media. The policy also contains:

  • a list of “House Rules” to appear on our social media channels
  • how Kiama Council uses social media in emergency situations
  • standards of conduct on social media
  • a framework for dealing with complaints
  • best practice for record keeping in line with the Government Information (Public Access) Act 2009 and the requirements of the State Records act 1998
  • guidelines for Council Officials’ private use of social media.

Kiama Council introduced its first Social Media Policy in 2012 and this is the third update to the policy over the years.
