Volunteer Profile - Russell Halverson

Published on 17 May 2022

As part of National Volunteer Week (16 to 22 May) we’re shining a light on some of the great people who serve their community by giving their time freely to help at Kiama Council.

Volunteers are an integral part of our day-to-day operations, including at our Family History Centre, where an amazing team of volunteers devote their day assisting visitors to the Centre who are keen to discover their own family history.

Russell Halverson is one of the Centre’s experienced volunteers who selflessly provides research advice and guidance to its many visitors every week.

Russell first volunteered at the Centre 10 years ago after expressing an interest to volunteer at Kiama Library.

At the time there was no availability in the Library, so it was suggested he volunteer at the Centre downstairs.

The rest, they say is ‘history’.

His volunteering foray followed his retirement and, like so many people with a few extra available hours during the week, he wanted to ensure that his mind stayed sharp, a sure thing when conducting family history research.

Despite not having any research background specifically with family history, Russell’s background in accounting and auditing provided the necessary computer skills and attention to detail required in such a position.

With precision and capacity for lateral thinking, Russell soon became one of our competent and skilled researchers.

He’s been able to establish and connect with his Norwegian family members, and use his own experience to allow our visitors to the Centre to connect with their families, both here and abroad.
