Kiama Council is adopting a new Code of Meeting Practice to reflect the increasing use of video meeting platforms such as Zoom and Microsoft Teams.

The NSW Government introduced emergency legislation at the outbreak of COVID allowing online Council meetings.

The updated Code of Meeting Practice normalises the ability of individual councillors to attend meetings via phone or video.

The Code also allows entirely online Council Meetings in the event of natural disasters or public health emergencies.

Amendments have also been made to the webcasting of meetings.

Another important change implements a recommendation of the Independent Commission Against Corruption (ICAC):

Council business papers will now include a reminder to councillors of their oath or affirmation of office, and their conflict of interest disclosure obligations.

The draft Code of Meeting Practice is on public exhibition for 28 days, during which submissions can be made.

These submissions will be reported to Council when it considers the final version of the Code for adoption.

Submissions close 5pm, Sunday 21 August.

Kiama Council is required to adopt a new Code of Meeting Practice, using the NSW Government’s Model Code of Meeting Practice for local councils, under the Local Government Act 1993 and Local Government (General) Regulation 2021.
