Shark safety and SMART drumlines at Kiama’s beaches

Kiama’s beaches are included in the NSW Government’s $16 million Shark Management Strategy, SMART (Shark-Management-Alert-in-Real-Time) where drumlines are one of the shark bite mitigation measures currently being used.

SMART drumlines are deployed daily by the NSW Department of Primary Industries (DPI) at beaches in the Kiama Municipal Council area. You may spot a boat deploying the drumlines each morning. The SMART drumlines’ orange buoys are also visible from the shore.

This state-of the art technology differs greatly from the operation of traditional drumlines as they are designed and operated to maximise the survival of sharks and other marine animals, while promoting the safety of people who use our beaches and waterways.
