Our coaches are all accredited with The Australian Swimming Coaches and Teachers Association (ASCTA) and Swim Australia (as the peak body for swimming Coaches).

Our coaches are passionate and dedicated to providing a high quality, well-structured squad sessions for students ranging from recreational swimmers to elite.

If your child isn't an existing swim school or squad student and they wish to trial for a squad, please contact the Leisure Centre to arrange a suitable time to attend a trial.

Squad levels

Squad Entry Level Pathway

Race Skills Squad

Race skills is to be used as an additional class for Mini squad 2/3 swim school swimmers, or students who are new to the Transition Squad (see Transition Squad information below)

Selection: by invitation of swim instructor or coach

Criteria: 

  • Age 7 to 12 years
  • Must currently be enrolled into a Mini squad 2/3 swim school class or new to the Transition Squad
  • Swimmers wanting additional help with dives, starts and turns.

 

Transition Squad

2 sessions per week, swimmers aged 8-12 years of age

The initial advancement beyond swim school (Mini squad 2/3)

Coaches aim to provide swimmers with a positive learning experience that allows for swimmers to progress in swimming and related sports

Focus on stroke and technical development of all five strokes, adding fitness and broadening their skill base

Selection: by invitation of swim instructor or coach

Criteria:

  • Minimum of two sessions/week
  • Swimming competitively or for fitness
  • Proficient in all strokes (freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke, butterfly, streamlines, dives and turns)
  • Confident in own swimming ability.

Squad Performance Level Pathway

Junior Performance Squad

Up to three sessions per week, normally swimmers are 12 years or over

Selection: by invitation of coach

Selection criteria:

  • Minimum three sessions/week with the intention of increasing to four sessions later in the term (Tuesday/Thursday morning and Monday/Wednesday afternoon)
  • Competent in reading the clock and leading the lane
  • Comprehend time cycles
  • Able to do to competitive turns, streamlines and dive starts
  • Swim competitively (pool, surf club, triathlons) 
  • Working towards country and state competition for pool or surf
  • Prepared to implement instructions based on technique, skill and race strategy
  • Able to take on and accept instructions based on technique, skill and race strategy
  • Able to adhere to the Code of Conduct.

National Target Squad

Up to five sessions per week, swimmers are 13 years and over

Selection: by invitation of coach

Selection criteria:

  • Mandatory five sessions/week
  • Mandatory three dry land sessions/week (gym and/or fitness class)
  • Train for and compete regularly in 200 Individual Medley 
  • State Age for Swimming or Top 16 for State Age Surf or IAS for Triathlon
  • Attends targeted meet for pool or surf
  • Prepared to implement instructions based on technique, skill and race strategy
  • Able to take on and accept instructions based on technique, skill and race strategy
  • Able to adhere to the Code of Conduct.

Squad Fitness Pathway

Junior Fitness Squad

Up to three sessions per week, swimmers are 12 years or over

Selection: by invitation of coach

Selection criteria:

  • Willing to train up to three days per week (Tuesday, Thursday, Friday) afternoon
  • Able to maintain a reasonable pace with the squad for at least one hour 
  • Competent at swimming all four strokes 
  • Show initiative in the squad 
  • Swimmers can still train with the intention of competing without having to fulfill the requirements of the Junior Development Squad (Performance pathway).
 

Senior Fitness Squad

Up to three sessions per week, swimmers are 15 years and over 

Selection: open to everyone

Criteria:

  • Past competitive swimmers who still want to maintain proper stroke AND current Master swimmers who still compete (pool, surf, tri or other aquatic sports)
  • Willing to train up to three days per week (Monday, Wednesday, Friday mornings)
  • Develop technique and stroke efficiency
  • Wish to contribute to overall fitness and wellbeing
  • Willing to learn and adopt new skills
  • Practice a safe form of swimming.

Adult Stroke Correction Squad

Adult Stroke Correction Squad

  • 18 years
  • Competent to swim for up to one hour
  • Adults who wish to become more confident swimming in the surf, pool or simply build swim fitness
  • Adults who would like to increase stroke efficiency and refine their current stroke technique
  • Wish to learn and adopt skills to increase swimming ability
  • Wish to contribute to overall fitness and wellbeing
  • Practice a safe form of swimming.
