NAIDOC Week

Sorry Day 2009

NAIDOC Week invites all Australians to acknowledge our history that dates back thousands of generations, embrace our culture, and celebrate Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

Kiama Council provides a number of NAIDOC Week activities each year, in 2022 this included:

Our annual Aboriginal Art Exhibition at the Old Fire Station Gallery

NAIDOC Exhibition - 2022 NAIDOC EXhibition - 2022 - Weaving

Co-creating the Local Government Regional NAIDOC Awards

These Awards celebrate the contribution and achievements of Aboriginal communities in the Illawarra and Shoalhaven.

The Award ceremony is held in a different local government area each year and will be held in Kiama in 2023.

Wollongong hosted the 2022 awards. The video below shows the event and the award winners.

The WodI Wodi All Around Language Competition

Run through Kiama Library, this competition encourages primary school aged children to draw or paint their favourite place in nature and include some of the things from a list of Wodi Wodi words. High school aged young people were invited to create an Instagram reel depicting their favourite place in nature on Wodi Wodi country, incorporating Wodi Wodi words into the reel.
