Our ceremoniesMayor and new citizen holding certificate

Australia welcomes applications from eligible permanent residents who wish to make their commitment to Australia by becoming Australian citizens.

Once your application has been approved you will be invited to attend a citizenship ceremony.  A citizenship ceremony is a special event and allows us to officially welcome our newest citizens into our community as well as the Australian community.

We hold our citizenship ceremonies in the Council Chambers except for Australia Day - this ceremony is held in Hindmarsh Park and forms part of our Australia Day activities. The ceremony is a special event performed by our Mayor who officially welcomes new citizens as full members of the Australian community.  Each new citizen is presented with a citizenship certificate and is also given a small gift from the council.  The ceremony is followed by light refreshments for you and your invited guests.

If you've been an Australian permanent resident for two years or more and want more information about Australian citizenship, please visit the citizenship section of the Department of Immigration and Border Protection website or call 131 880 (for the cost of a local call).
