Community Development Officer (Aboriginal)

Our Community Development Officer (Aboriginal) plays an essential role to facilitate the participation of our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in Council’s services, programs and decisions. This position provides strategic support to the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community to build capacity and resources; and work with Council to provide a culturally safe space for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people to engage with Council on matters important to community. It leads the planning and implementation of programs, projects and activities in collaboration and consultation with Kiama Council's Aboriginal Advisory Group to build strong relations between Council and the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community.

Introducing Amethyst Downing

Amethyst commenced in the Community Development Officer (Aboriginal) position in February 2025. Amethyst comes to this role with diverse experiences working with young people across community-based projects, as a business owner/multidisciplinary artist, and working with the federal government. Based with the Community Hubs team at Joyce Wheatley, Amethyst will be leading Council’s efforts and commitments toward reconciliation, delivering on a range of partnership initiatives within Council’s Reconciliation Action Plan, working closely with our Aboriginal community and other stakeholders, planning and delivery of community events and programs and supporting Council departments with Aboriginal cultural knowledge, information and protocols.
