Homelessness

Homelessness is an issue that affects all communities, including Kiama. Whether short or long term, homelessness is one of the most severe forms of disadvantage and social exclusion that a person can experience. Homelessness results in significant social and economic costs not just to individuals and their families, but also to communities and the nation as a whole.

The issue of homelessness is a complex problem that has many and varied causes. Family violence, cost of living, lack of affordable housing, unemployment, mental illness, family breakdown and drug and alcohol abuse and other variables are all recognised factors contributing to the homelessness issue in Australia.

Kiama Council is committed to work with local homeless support services to assist those in need.

There is help available to homeless people or people at the risk of homelessness.  Access to Material Aid and Social Support within Kiama LGA can be found in the Related Information below.
