Crooked River Bridge

Kiama Council is undertaking restoration work of the Seven Mile Beach Reserve dune system thanks to a $48,422 grant from the Crown Reserves Improvement Fund (CRIF).

The project will target weed control, erosion and loss of habitat to support restoration and resilience of the Bangalay Sand Forest Endangered Ecological Community (EEC) near Crooked River at Seven Mile Beach.

Council has appointed a contractor and is working on a Restoration Works Plan for the Council-managed portion of the reserve, to ensure a strategic approach that will minimise the impact on native flora and fauna in this delicate ecological area.

The vegetation in some areas of the site is currently in poor condition with large patches of two invasive weeds: lantana and asparagus fern. Other weed species such as Bitou bush and Boneseed are also present in considerable densities. The purpose of the project is to eliminate or prevent the spread of new and emerging invasive species, and reduce the impacts of widespread invasive species, such as those noted above.

Once Council has finalised its Restoration Works Plan, our contractors will commence work – likely towards the end of 2025.

Council, will contribute around $5,000 funding from its Crown Reserve Fund to the project and thanks the NSW Government Department of Planning, Housing and Infrastructure, and Crown Lands for their funding assistance to undertake this important project to protect our precious native resources.
