Information and advice for Kiama residents

Current situation

Kiama Council is aware of recent H5 bird flu (avian influenza) detections in wild birds in parts of Australia, including isolated detections on the NSW South Coast. There have been no confirmed cases in the Kiama local government area. Council is monitoring the situation and remains in contact with relevant government agencies.

The NSW Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development (DPIRD) leads the response to H5 bird flu in New South Wales and is responsible for surveillance, disease management and public information.

What is H5 bird flu?

H5 bird flu is a highly pathogenic strain of avian influenza that primarily affects wild birds and poultry. It has caused significant impacts to wildlife overseas and has recently been detected in wild birds in Australia.

The risk to the general public remains low. Human infections are rare and generally occur following close contact with infected birds or contaminated environments.

What should I do if I see sick or dead birds?

AVOID

Do not touch sick or dead birds, wildlife or their environment. Keep children and pets away.

RECORD

Note the location, date and time. If it is safe, take photos or video to assist authorities.

REPORT

Report multiple sick or dead birds, marine mammals or other wildlife to the Emergency Animal Disease Hotline:1800 675 888

Signs of bird flu in wildlife

Affected birds may show signs such as:

Difficulty standing, walking or flying, swimming in circles
Twisted neck or unusual movements
Swelling around the head, neck or eyes
Coughing or sneezing
Sudden death without obvious symptoms.

Council's role

Kiama Council does not manage H5 bird flu outbreaks. The response is led by NSW DPIRD and other government agencies. Council will continue to:

Monitor official advice
Share accurate information with the community
Support government communications where needed
Provide local operational updates if any Council services are affected.
