Gainsborough Oval has experienced poor oval drainage impacting on community use of the oval.

As a result, Kiama Council explored and was successful in receiving a grant from the NSW Office of Sport to undertake investigations, design and construction to improve oval drainage and usability.

To improve the oval drainage, a subsoil drainage system is to be installed. The work will also include demolition of the damaged cricket pitch and replacement with a new synthetic surface cricket pitch.

These improvements will make the facilities safer, more accessible, and fit for purpose for local sporting groups and the wider community.

Local sports groups and associations who use the oval regularly have been informed and alternative arrangements have been made.

Footpaths and the skate ramp will remain open.

Work will begin on 7 April 2026 and is expected to finish late May. Following grass regrowth, Gainsborough Oval is likely to reopen late July.

This project is funded by the NSW Government.
