Celebrating our volunteers

Published on 16 May 2022

Mayor Neil Reilly has encouraged our community to celebrate and thank those who donate their time helping others during National Volunteer Week (16 to 22 May).

“No one has made it through life without someone else’s help, volunteering is an act of heroism on a grand scale it matters profoundly,” Clr. Reilly said.

“It does more than help people beat the odds; it changes the odds. That’s why we at council support National Volunteer Week.”

Volunteers have played a critical role during recent flooding, fires and the COVID pandemic.

Volunteering Australia estimates there are more than 400,000 work directly in emergency response and relief alone.

Locally, Clr Reilly said more than 25 per cent of locals volunteered compared to 18 per cent across NSW.

Volunteers are an integral part of Kiama Council’s day-to-day operations at Blue Haven Illawarra, Kiama Library, Family History Centre and Visitor Information Centre.

The Blue Haven volunteer program was established more than 25 years ago and now boasts more 100 people who transport residents and clients to appointments, shopping, group outings and special events.

They also help at our Bonaira home activities such as reading, massage, pet therapy, craft, painting and BBQs.

Volunteers at our Family History Centre devote their days assisting locals and people from across the world learn about their family and connections to the region.

Our Visitor Information Centre volunteers provide our visitors with a friendly face and helpful advice for where to stay and what to see.

Research shows volunteering has personal benefits such as increased happiness, a greater sense of worth and a high level of compassion which all contribute to better physical and mental health.
