Council advises community to prepare for heavy rain

Heavy Rains annoucement

With a severe weather warning and heavy rain expected over the next two days, Kiama Council is advising residents in our area to be alert but not alarmed.

Council staff have been clearing drains and roads to remove storm debris and preparing buildings that have been flooded in the past, such as the Jamberoo School of Arts and the adjacent Jamberoo Preschool.

Swamp Road, Jamberoo remains closed from the weekend’s rain and will remain closed for the next few days.

Please follow the State Emergency Service (SES) advice for storm conditions: never enter or travel through floodwater, stay indoors where possible and, if driving, put on hazard lights and pull over to the side of the road keeping clear of drains, causeways, streams, creeks and power lines.

Community members are advised to refer to the Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) for weather updates and keep listening to ABC Illawarra radio, which is the emergency broadcaster for updates on changing local conditions.

Council has been informed that Kiama Farmer’s Market is cancelled for this week due to the rain. We have met with the organisers of the Red Hot Summer Tour, and any official announcement will go out to ticket holders via Ticket Master or Regional Touring directly.

Council is in regular contact with the SES and is ready to assist as and when they need help.

We will continue to monitor and address issues as they come up.

Please report any drain blockages to Council by calling our customer service team on (02) 4232 0444 or emailing council@kiama.nsw.gov.au

If you experience any flooding issues, have concerns or need assistance such as sandbags, contact the SES on 132 500 or if it is an emergency call 000.
