Kiama Council is taking the first physical steps in preparing Hindmarsh Park for its $4m upgrade, removing the old cottage at the Shoalhaven Street end of the park.

Once removed, the area will be temporarily turfed and become part of Hindmarsh Park in readiness for the planned relocation of the bus shelter and installation of new bike parking facilities to service Hindmarsh Park and the broader Kiama Town Centre.

The existing bus shelter will remain until the main construction works are underway.

The cottage was formerly the home of the local NSW Ambulance Service.

Renovation and reuse of the cottage was considered as part of the Hindmarsh Park upgrade.

However, the poor condition of the building, including the presence of asbestos, and the fact it is structurally unsound, unsafe to occupy and has been condemned, means it has to be demolished and all material removed. It is not a Heritage listed building.

Work started this Monday 17 July and is expected take around 4 weeks to complete.

The area will be fully fenced off during this time. Precautions have been taken to ensure safety and minimise the impact of the demolition to the community.

Council is still finalising the contracts for the upgrade of Hindmarsh Park and we will update the community when we have further information.
