Kiama Council has been advised by the builder of the new Gerringong Surf Life Saving Club that Asbestos Containing Material (ACM) has been uncovered during demolition and excavation works.
The builder (Bluestone Building Group) has notified adjacent residents and SafeWork NSW as well as implementing an immediate stop work on the affected area of the development.
There is no immediate risk to the community.
Bluestone has engaged an occupational hygienist to supervise management works.
Air monitoring equipment and warning signs are being installed and a further exclusion zone is being put in place as a precaution until the removal process is completed.
Bluestone expects the removal of the ACM to start in approximately five days.
