Jacki Johnson - Illawarra Shoalhaven City Commissioner

The Greater Cities Commission has announced three new City Commissioners today, including Ms Jacki Johnson for the Illawarra.

The Commissioners will lead planning for NSW’s Six Cities Region over the next four years.

The Greater Cities Commission is a planning body that reports to the NSW Government and has been charged with creating Australia’s first global city region, delivering global economic scale and local liveability.

The Six Cities region includes the Illawarra-Shoalhaven City, the Lower Hunter and Greater Newcastle City, the Central Coast City, the Western Parkland City, the Central River City and the Eastern Harbour City.

Being part of the Six Cities Region is intended to link Port Kembla to Western Sydney, expand our knowledge economy through higher education and improve rail connections.

Kiama Mayor Neil Reilly said “I’m pleased to welcome Ms Johnson to the role of City Commissioner for our region and I look forward to working closely with her over the coming months and years to deliver the best outcomes for our community.”

According to the Greater Cities Commission press release: “City Commissioners are the connective tissue between state and local government. They facilitate the conversations and empower stakeholders to set common goals for their city.”

“As key holders of the relationships within their cities, City Commissioners ensure connectivity between the Six Cities Region Plan and their City Plans, and that the ground up work done by local government and other entities informs into the City Plans.”

Ms Jacki Johnson was announced as the new Illawarra-Shoalhaven City Commissioner, alongside Mr Matt Endacott, for the Lower Hunter and Greater Newcastle City and the Hon. Robyn Parker for the Central Coast City.

The Commissioners will hold four-year terms commencing September 2022.
