Destination Kiama is celebrating after securing the second leg of the new bodyboarding world tour, the Kiama Bodyboard Slam (30 July – 9 August).

Chair of Destination Kiama, Councillor Matt Brown, said the Kiama Bodyboard Slam was the only Association of Professional Bodyboarders (APB) World Tour event scheduled for Australia.

“The Kiama Bodyboard Slam is a massive coup for our region, building on the success of hosting the WSL Juniors in recent years,” Clr. Brown said.

“To have Kiama hosting a leg of the World Tour that includes Chile, Spain, Brazil and Portugal will once again put us in the global sporting spotlight.”

“Importantly, having more than 100 competitors in Kiama for 11 days in the normally slow business season in winter, is great for local business.”

Clr. Brown said securing key events for the slower tourism seasons was a key part of the new Tourism and Events strategy.

“I’d like to thank the team at Destination Kiama, who have worked closely with Destination NSW and Surfing NSW to make the Kiama Bodyboard Slam a reality.”

As part of the deal, Kiama has also secured the 2018 HIF NSW Bodyboard State Titles (4 May – 6 May).

Both events will be headquartered at Surf Beach, with organisers making use of other beaches up and down the coast, depending on conditions.
