International Day of People with Disability

It's International Day of People with Disability (3 December) and across our council, our staff are committed to ensuring our work benefits everyone.

In 2017 we developed a Disability Inclusion Action Plan.

Since then a great deal has been done to improve disability access across the full range of services we provide, as well as encouraging disability awareness and support across our community, including local businesses and community organisations.

This includes the significant work done by our Blue Haven staff regards disability support and coordination services.

But it also includes providing accessible amenities in our recent works program, such as the new amenities at Cooke Park (Boat Harbour).

We're also installing an adult change table in the new amenities at Kevin Walsh Oval in Jamberoo, complementing the one at Kiama Harbour.

The program includes playgrounds as well, such as the new playground at Hillview Crescent, which provides accessible play equipment.

In terms of accessible tourism our current upgrades of council holiday parks include fully accessible cabins at Surf Beach and Werri Beach.

Our efforts also extend online with work being done to ensure all new website content complies with relevant standards for accessibility.

Our goal is to achieve Level AA compliance of the World Wide Web Consortium’s Website Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) version 2.0.

These are international guidelines for how online content can be made accessible to a wider range of people with disabilities.

Some examples include the increased font size used on the site, and the addition of some ‘easy read’ versions of Council publications.

While we still have much work to do, a lot has been achieved in the last two years.

Thanks to our staff for embracing the goals and spirit of the Disability Action Plan.

A special thanks to members of our Access Committee and Disability Consultative Group for working with council.

Your involvement has been essential to the great work done so far.
